The Nezu Art Museum is a museum that exhibits the collection of the first generation Kaichiro Nezu.
Mr. Kaichiro Nezu, the first generation, was involved in the reconstruction of Tobu Railway and Southern Railway (current Nankai Electric Railway).
He is also a businessman called “Railway King” and a politician who served as a member of the Diet.

I collected antique Japanese and Oriental art from a young age.
In order to prevent Japanese art from leaking overseas, I bought a lot of private property and bought art.

After the death of the first generation Nezu Kaichiro, the collected collections were released without treasured.
Because there was the deceased’s will to enjoy with the public.

The second generation Neichiro Kaichiro opened the Nezu Art Museum.
The current “Nezu Art Museum” was originally built on the site of the Nezu residence.

The Nezu Museum currently holds 7,400 artworks, including 7 national treasures, 87 important cultural properties, and 94 important artworks.
There are a wide range of antiquities such as Japanese and Oriental paintings, books, sculptures, lacquer works, metalwork and ceramics.

Since the first generation Nezu Kaichiro was familiar with the tea ceremony, there is also a rich collection of tea utensils.

The reason for exhibiting the “Zushi Flower Map Screen” is because it is the best time to see the oysters in the garden on the premises.
If the timing is right, you can enjoy both the national treasure “Chinese Flower Map Screen” and the real oyster flutter.
It is a must-see spot that you want to see without missing the time.

In addition to art and architecture, the main attraction of the Nezu Museum is the 17,000 square meter vast Japanese garden.
It is a luxurious space filled with greenery that makes you forget that you are in the center of Minami Aoyama.

A three-dimensional garden that takes advantage of the natural slope.
You can enjoy the teahouses, ponds, and garden trees that change from season to season.

The appearance of the Nezu Museum is characterized by a large roof like a Japanese-style house.
It is a building with 2 floors above ground and 1 floor below ground.
A calm atmosphere that blends into the surrounding Japanese garden.

The first thing that attracts visitors to the Nezu Museum is the “Bamboo Corridor”.
Use the space under the eaves to reach the entrance through the approach between the bamboo hedge and the bamboo wall.
Also, don’t forget to look at the boat-shaped Tsukubai (hand basin placed in the garden) and the “moon stone ship”, which is placed near the Korean lantern before entering the “Bamboo Corridor”.
This work was once used in the Nezu residence, and looks like a lantern in the moonlight and a ship in the crescent moon.
