Eikando Zenrinji

About Eikando

There is Eikando in Higashiyama, Kyoto. The official name is called Zenrinji.
This is the head temple of the Jodo sect (Buddhist sect).
Eikando has many temple treasures.
For example, the Amida Nyorai statue and the silk treasure Yamakoshi Amida figure of the national treasure.

The history of Eikando is very old.
In early Heian period, Kobo was founded about 1000 years ago.

Since its founding, it has been known by many cultural people as the “Momiji Eikando”.
The beauty of the autumn leaves is also published in Kokin-wakashu (Japanese old poetry collection).

There are two spots you should definitely see at Eikando.

Eikando Hall’s autumn leaves usually begin in mid-November and are in full bloom around late November.
There are about 3000 Japanese maples and Japanese maples.
The interior of the park is colored, and carpets of fallen leaves are laid on the ground.
You can enjoy the beautiful autumnal scenery from anywhere you look around.
The sight is very fantastic.

Seiho Pond is famous for the autumn leaves of Eikando.
Japanese maple is planted around the pond.
You can enjoy the scenic scenery where the maple and paradise bridge are reflected on the surface of the water.

You can also climb Tahoto pagoda from the side of Mikage Road, and you will see a wonderful view over the precincts of the autumn leaves.
