About Ryogoku Kokugikan

The Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo is held three times a year as a sumo.
It is known as the sacred place of sumo.
Many people think that Ryogoku Kokugikan is only used for sumo.
However, it will be used as a boxing venue for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

At the front entrance, paintings depicting old sumo efforts and the winning cup are on display.
Even those who are not very familiar with sumo will feel familiar with sumo.
There are other shops and restaurants, Chanko Nabe store supervised by the sumo room, and a museum.
You can enjoy it even if you visit on a day without sumo.

Until Ryogoku Kokugikan was established, there were no facilities that could hold sumo events stably.
The Ryogoku Kokugikan was first built in 1909.

At that time, it became a hot topic in Japan’s first dome-shaped steel-framed Western-style building.

Rebuilt in 1920 because a fire broke out in 1917.
However, it disappeared again and was rebuilt by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, three years later.
It disappeared in World War II in 1945.
If it burns many times, it is reconstructing.

The current Ryogoku Kokugikan was built in 1984 with a total construction cost of 15 billion yen.
It has been used as a sacred sanctuary since January 1985.

The highlights of Ryogoku Kokugikan

The highlight of Ryogoku Kokugikan is watching sumo wrestling.
Sumo TV broadcasts are held in the evening, but they are actually held in the morning.
In the morning, a sumo is held by a newly debuted wrestler.

Four seats can be seated in the seat called “Suna-kaburi” around the ring.
In “Suna-kaburi”, you can watch sumo.
In addition, there are three types of seats, a “mass seat” and a “chair seat” where you sit on a cushion and watch the game.
It can accommodate up to 11,098 people.

In particular, the trout seats are separated, so it is easy to watch, and you can enjoy watching Sumo without worrying about the surroundings.

Life-sized panel of wrestlers

Life-sized panels of wrestlers will be displayed in the square and in front of the Ryogoku Kokugikan
It has become a popular shooting spot.
If you look side by side, you can feel the size of wrestlers.

Sumo Museum

The Ryogoku Kokugikan has a Sumo Museum that contains sumo materials.
You can enter for free even if you do not have a ticket.
There is a wide range of materials from Edo period to recent materials.
You can feel familiar with Sumo and enjoy it even if you are not familiar with Sumo lovers.
